How to Dry and Cure Cannabis Without Losing Aroma.

Almost everyone has noticed it: fresh flowers smell bright, but after drying the aroma fades and often drifts toward a generic hay/Afghan note. That isn't inevitable — it's the result of drying mistakes. There are five factors to control: temperature, humidity, airflow, light and time.

Why aroma disappears.

Terpenes are oily: drying doesn't destroy them, but they evaporate on contact with air and oxidize into terpenoids (which smell weaker). Flavonoids are water-soluble and leave first, along with the water. The gentler and slower the moisture leaves, and the less contact there is with air, light and heat, the more aroma you keep. Here it is visually, on a terpene volatility model:

Temperature.

• Home sweet spot: +16…+20 °C, kept stable.
• Above +22 °C — noticeable loss of flavor and aroma.
• Below +5 °C is also risky without experience: the process runs unevenly.

Humidity.

• 50 % and below — drying goes too fast and the terpenes get blown off.
• Above 65 % — risk of mold.
• The sweet spot: 55–60 %.

Airflow, light and timing.

Air should move, but not blast: gentle circulation yes, a fan pointed straight at the buds no. Light, especially UV, is the main catalyst of degradation, so you dry strictly in the dark. Timing: 5–7 days is too rough, longer than 20 days risks mold; the home sweet spot is 10–16 days.

Do you need a freeze dryer.

A freeze dryer is no cure-all: at low pressure the boiling point drops, and part of the monoterpenes is lost just the same. Its value is catching the moment when the water is gone but the flavonoids remain. For competition-grade quality it's indispensable; at home you can absolutely experience the wonders of a living aroma without one.

6. After drying — cure in airtight jars with burping; the aroma gets cleaner with every week.
